On Friday night, Yazoo City High School’s baseball season came to a close after dropping both games of a doubleheader to Kosciusko in the first round of the MHSAA 4A playoffs.
Instead of playing on back-to-back days at each school, it was decided that the teams would play a doubleheader at Kosciusko on Friday, and if a third game would be needed, it would be played on Saturday at Yazoo City High.
Unfortunately for the Indians, it was not needed.
Kosciusko won the first game by a score of 12-3.
The second game of the evening was not much better for Yazoo City High. The Indians lost by a score of 12-0 in the second game, ending the season for Yazoo City High.
Despite the losses, however, Yazoo City High head coach Ben Tillman thought there was plenty of good to take from the season.
“We had some success and some rough points,” Tillman said. “At the end of the day, it wasn’t bad by any means. We made a lot of progress from last year to this year. We missed some opportunities to win some more games, but that’s a learning experience and something to build on.”
For Tillman as a young coach, the year was a valuable learning experience.
“I think one of the biggest things I learned, which I already knew, just reiterated it to myself, was that as a coach, you are constantly trying to get better,” Tillman said. “I know now what I need to expect out of myself and my players. I’m young, and that’s a good and bad thing at times. I’ve got to always remember to stay steady and not waver. In the end, I am extremely grateful that I was given the opportunity to lead this program.”
Yazoo City ended the season with a 9-12 record and a 4-4 record in the district.
