For the first time since the 2016 regular season finale against Velma Jackson, Yazoo County found themselves on the losing end of a regular season football game in a lopsided 49-6 loss to Germantown.
It was all Germantown from the opening snap.
The Mavericks took to the ground, gashing the Panthers with big chunk plays.
Germantown began scoring touchdown after touchdown, and after the first quarter had come to a completion, they held a commanding 28-0 lead.
Things only got worse for Robert Dobb’s squad in the second quarter.
Germantown’s Mavericks racked up 21 more points in the second quarter to bring the score to 49-0 at the half.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Panthers had one final opportunity to get the goose egg out of their column.
Yazoo County finally got on the board in the fourth quarter when quarterback Kobe Fisher hooked up with Malik Banks for a score, cutting the lead to 49-6, a score that would prove to be the final.
Fisher ended the game with an 8-for-16 effort for 70 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He also chipped in seven rushes for 23 yards.
Kory Gainwell led the way on the ground with 12 rushes for 38 yards. Gainwell also had two total tackles.
Jamarion Stewart had nine rushes for 35 yards.
Malik Banks had a big game, catching four passes for 67 yards and the lone touchdown for the Panthers.
Ben Luckett led the way defensively for the Panthers with 10 total tackles.
William Noel had seven total tackles, while Laraveon Edwards had six total tackles.
DQ Anderson, Cameron Shaffer, Dyevionte Brown, and Tredarius Carr each had a tackle for loss in the losing effort.
The Panthers will try to get back on the right track on Friday night when they host rival Yazoo City High School.
Yazoo City High School’s Indians evened their record up to 1-1 on Friday night when they defeated Humphreys County 38-0.
The Battle for Yazoo is scheduled for 7 p.m.
