Benton Academy’s Lady Raiders dropped their final game before the Christmas break in a 46-36 loss to Central Holmes Christian School on Friday night.
Central Holmes jumped on Benton early in the contest, scoring 13 points to the Lady Raiders’ three in the first quarter of play.
In the second quarter, Benton played much better and even scored 13 points, but the Lady Trojans countered with 16 points of their own to take a 28-19 lead into the half.
The second half was a much closer battle than the first with Central Holmes coming out on top 18-17 to bring the final score to 46-36.
Benton Academy head girls coach Hall Redfearn thought his team had a chance against Central Holmes, but their slow start made it a difficult hill to climb.
“In the first half, we really played tentative,” Redfearn said. “They played really well in the second half. We actually outscored them in the second half. Our biggest problem was the first quarter. Getting down 13-3 was our undoing.”
Madelyn Manor led the Lady Raiders in scoring with 17 points in the loss.
Amber Porter was second on the team in scoring with eight points in the losing effort.
Star guard Brittany McCausley is due to return to the court after the Christmas break, and Redfearn believes his team learned a lot about themselves in her absence.
“We’re going to be better once we get Brittany back because we had to play without her,” Redfearn said. “They had to learn to play without her, and that made them better. Madelyn Manor, Ana Posey Jones, Lake Shipp, and Amber Porter all really stepped up without her.”
Benton Academy will return to the basketball court on January 5 when they travel to Flora to face Tri-County Academy.
