The Mavericks of Manchester Academy continued their season-opening win streak on Friday night with a 56-20 win over Kemper Academy.
The win brought their overall record to 4-0.
According to Manchester Academy head football coach Bryan Dendy, the Mavericks did not have their trademark hot start against Kemper.
“We did get off to a slow start,” Dendy said. “We came out kind of flat. We were finally able to pick it up late in the first quarter and early in the second quarter.”
After punting on the first possession,
The Mavericks responded by putting things together quickly and getting on a roll that couldn’t be stopped.
They outscored Kemper 56-12 the rest of the way.
Dendy was pleased with how his team responded to the adversity to start the game.
“We jumped offsides on the first possession,” Dendy said. “We had to punt on that drive. That kind of woke us up. We started clicking after that. Our kids really stepped up and responded when we needed it.”
Michael Williams had a monster game on the ground for the Mavs, taking his seven carries for 111 Yards with two touchdowns.
Parks Poe made the most of his three carries, going 31 yards with a touchdown. Poe also caught four passes for 35 yards and contributed four tackles.
Jon Riley Poe had three carries for 10 yards and caught two passes for 16 yards. He also picked off a pass and took it 50 yards for a touchdown.
Dylan Dendy had three carries for 18 yards and hauled in a 19-yard touchdown pass. Dendy also racked up six tackles with two sacks.
Greyson Winstead had two carries for 10 yards, while Staten Greenlee had two carries for 8 yards.
Blake Coghlan hauled in two passes for 32 Yards and a touchdown. He also had four tackles in the win.
Matt Carroll made his presence known with a 60-yard punt return for a touchdown.
Manchester has a much-needed bye this weekend.
Dendy hopes to use that time to heal up some bumps and bruises and become a better team.
“Yeah, it is a good time for a bye week,” Dendy said. “We have the normal bumps and bruises you’d expect after four weeks of games. We’re actually pretty healthy right now, but this will give us an opportunity to rest up. We’ll watch film, practice, and try to get better.”
