After dropping their season opener to Holmes County Central, Yazoo City High School has now rattled off three straight wins, including Friday night’s 36-13 win over Crystal Springs, to push their overall record to 3-1.
Yazoo City head coach Rodney Adams is pleased with the position the Indians have put themselves in.
“3-1 is good,” Adams said. “We put in a lot of effort to prepare. Even in the first game that we lost, we would’ve done well if we had our proper defense in. Since then we’ve made adjustments. We’ve been trying to work out the small things. Hopefully by district play, we’ll be 5-1. We start with Clarksdale, and they’re ranked number one in the district.”
The first quarter was an offensive showcase for the Indians.
Despite giving up seven points, the Indians put up 24 points to make it a 24-7 game.
The defenses finally began to click in the second and third quarters, where neither team was able to get anything going at all, making it a 24-7 game heading into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Yazoo City outscored Crystal Springs 12-6 to make it a final score of 36-13 in favor of the Indians.
Yazoo City decided to air the ball out all night against the Tigers.
Kory Price went 28-for-35 for 218 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. The senior also managed to pick up 78 yards and a touchdown on only two rushing attempts.
According to Adams, the reason for the many passes was fumbles.
“Our running back had a tough night with two fumbles,” Adams said. “He was sort of out of it after those. After that, we started passing more than normal. The defense was leaving us open. We took advantage of that.”
One of the most positive things Adams has taken from the game was to see his team be able to air it out when needed.
“It’s always good when you can pass the ball around,” Adams said. “It really opens up the run when you can pass like that. It takes linebackers out of their comfort zone. It’s always good when you can exploit that. We have a lot of receivers that don’t get a lot of acknowledgement because of how much we run. We want to put them in a position to succeed.”
Jayden Stewart took nine carries 78 yards and caught three passes for 25 yards in the win.
Rorecoss Willis led the receiving effort with four catches for 92 yards and a touchdown.
Telvin Robinson hauled in three passes for 61 yards with two touchdowns in the victory.
Percy Green caught three passes for 26 yards and a touchdown.
Allen Hudson had a big game defensively, racking up 12 tackles with three sacks and a fumble recovery.
John Jones had nine total tackles with 1.5 sacks.
Roderick Knight had seven total tackles, an interception, and a fumble recovery for a touchdown.
Demareon Fowler had five tackles with two sacks and a forced fumble.
The Indians will try to keep their newfound momentum going when they face off with Port Gibson on Friday night.
Port Gibson is 0-3-1 on the season after falling 34-0 to Terry.
Adams believes Port Gibson will show a much different look than they did a year ago.
“Port Gibson is known more for running, but they’re more balanced right now,” Adams said. “They line up in a lot of empty sets. I think we match well against them. They came here and won last year. We hope the tables have turned this year. We hope to go over there and get a win. They don’t have a win right now, but that doesn’t always mean a lot. We don’t take any team for granted.”
Kickoff at Port Gibson is set for 7 p.m.
