A Yazoo County teacher is among the finalists for the 2026 Mississippi Teacher of the Year.
Lauren Saxton, an Algebra teacher at Yazoo County High School, was selected by the Mississippi Department of Education as a finalist for the Teacher of the Year honor. Just earlier this year, she was also named Yazoo County School District’s Teacher of the Year by the local district.
“I am incredibly honored and humbled to be named a Final 4 finalist for Mississippi’s Teacher of the Year,” Saxton said. “It is truly a privilege to represent the Yazoo County School District and the amazing students, educators, and community that make this work so meaningful every day. This recognition is not just about me, but it reflects the dedication and passion of everyone I have the honor of working alongside.”
The Mississippi Teacher of the Year program recognizes exemplary teachers in the state. The award recipient will be asked to share expertise through various presentations, professional development, and activities for the improvement of education. The recipient also will receive a $5,000 stipend and will represent Mississippi in the National Teacher of the Year competition.
“Education centers on empowering students to recognize their potential, think critically, and confidently shape their future through relationships, relevance, and rigor,” Saxton said. “I believe when students feel genuinely seen, valued, and supported they are more willing to engage deeply and rise to their fullest potential. Learning should be about building not only knowledge but also character, confidence, and transforming possibilities into opportunities.”
The recipients will be announced during a program set for 11 a.m. April 17, at the Jackson Convention Complex in Jackson.
