Dear Editor,
For years there have been negative after negative news story about Yazoo City. The violence. Extreme poverty. Data sharing on how Yazoo City schools have failing ratings.
In the years since my retirement and return to Yazoo City, the only failing I can see is the overall state of the community as a whole. Yazoo City hailed as the Gateway to the delta is currently viewed as the place no one wants to be. Imagine being a young child or young adult with the cloud hanging over your head. Yet, it is the stigma that weighs us down as a community. What are the solutions you might ask? First there must be an honest look at the the problems, the causes, the effects and the solutions.
1. Lack of recreational activities for children a true recreational center with both physical and learning activities in central areas of the city. Of course it takes money to create and operate such a facility. Has this been discussed as one wày to reduce violence among our youth? There is nothing like a coach. Mentor or teacher who can help guide a child to become a disciplined and productive citizen.
2. Children not in school or at home - City ordinance outlining curfews for children sixteen years of age and under our after 10:00 p.m.
3. Gambling in public- City ordinance that prohibit gambling in public
4. Truancy - City ordinance that prohibit school age children on the streets during school hours. I believe there is one.
5. Drug and alcohol programs enacted and participation by young and old.
6. Parenting training for young and old, voluntary or legally mandated. Ask any teacher about the level of disrespect students display and you understand the breakdown begins at home.
7. Support for children in all they do. Time after time as I attend various meetings and other school events I see fewer and fewer parents. Friends and family members present to support their children. Given, there are many parents working during events and may not always be able to make it support means a lot. I wager that many are afraid to attend because of past negative events but, our children are still participating and we are still trying to make it safer for all. Presence is important!
8. Broken windows - if your City and surroundings are clean you begin to attract people and businesses that will help create jobs, revenue and residency that is supportive and productive.
9. Connection - The city, the churches, Law enforcement, the local businesses have to connect with each other and especially with the local schools. Can we create a program of mentorship and school adoption that connects us as a community? Our children should not be treated as outsiders no matter who is operating the public schools in our city. When you do a walk through how about a Talk through with them?
10. Let's create growth opportunities with the people and places we already have in the community. It takes creativity and thinking outside the box.
I know this is much to consider and nothing good happens quickly but, we need a plan for the future of our children and this city that is sustainable. I grew up here, l left and returned seven years ago. I have seen what violence can do and felt it's effects. I also have seen the positive affect of participating partnerships of parents, community, schools, Law Enforcement and businesses. This city needs these relationships to come together to solidify and further enhance our community future. Remember our children are our future in some sort of capacity. It is my hope that they will grow to become productive citizens with hearts that help and not harm. It starts now with us working together.
Sincerely,
Taunya Hatchett
