Dear Editor,
As a proud member of the Yazoo County Board of Supervisors, I was deeply moved to see our local students participating in Jackson State University’s STEM Summer Camp earlier this month. This week-long experience brought nearly 200 Mississippi high schoolers—including several from Yazoo County—to JSU’s campus to explore science, technology, engineering, and math in hands-on, exciting ways.
This kind of opportunity has not always been available to students in the Delta. But thanks to the support of ExxonMobil, Rice University, and Jackson State, our students were not only welcomed—they were prioritized. It was clear that this wasn’t just a camp. It was a powerful investment in their future.
ExxonMobil’s commitment to Yazoo County is showing up in real ways—from supporting schools and first responders to investing in local community organizations. Sending Yazoo students to JSU’s STEM camp is another example of that commitment. It sends a message that our students matter, and that our region isn’t being overlooked.
What I saw at the STEM camp wasn’t just potential—it was the future in motion. And it gave me hope for what’s ahead in Yazoo County and across the Delta.
Sincerely,
Sup. Joseph Thomas Jr.
