On January 21, 2026, the Lord called Philip Tarpley “Doc” Young home. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He passed away after an extended illness at home surrounded by loved ones. He was of Baptist faith and a member of Lena Baptist Church.
Philip attended both Mississippi State University and Auburn University obtaining a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. He worked over 45 years with both large and small animals. He had a tender heart for all of God's creatures. Philip was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, and he also farmed cattle and timber.
“Doc" was known for his infectious laugh and sense of humor. He loved a good joke and was a charismatic storyteller.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Philip Taylor Young and Evie Rue Stribling Young; infant great grandchild, Swayze Cate Jones; and nephew, Taylor Moore.
Philip is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Virginia Ann (Jeannie) Young; a sister, Linda Minerva Moore (Bob); his children, Mandy Jones (Marshall), Rhett Young (Kim), Terri Barnes (Barry), Jennifer Mayfield, and Brooks Dunwoody (Sadie); grandchildren, Mackenzie Garrett Jones (Courtney), Nicole Young Tillman, Peyton Spencer Barnes (Lauryn), Reid Lathem Barnes, Laura Brittnay Saxton, Forrest Barrett Saxton, Adalynn Vangorder, William Brooks Dunwoody, II, Jordan Dunwoody, and 12 great-grandchildren.
We are eternally grateful to his loving caregivers who became family: Sheila Scott, Lynn Sistrunk, and Ashley Fuller.
Pallbearers include Mackenzie Garrett Jones, Rhett Young, Brooks Dunwoody, Barrett Saxton, Peyton Barnes, Reid Lathem Barnes.
Honorary pallbearers are Marshall Jones, Barry Barnes, and Dusty Shannon.
The family takes great comfort in knowing that Philip believed "To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord", 2 Corinthians 5:8.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 am until 12:00 pm on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at Wilcox Funeral Home in Carthage, MS. Services will be at noon in the Wilcox Chapel. Interment will follow in the Young Family Cemetery in Lena, MS.
