With some Yazoo City leaders still questioning the payroll docket, each city department should expect to see time clocks as part of their daily operations.
The Board of Mayor and Aldermen were recently provided with a quote to install time clocks in each city department. And one alderman said a simple sign-in sheet will no longer suffice when it comes to recording city employee hours.
According to the Aug. 11 board minutes, Alderman Charlie Jenkins made the motion to install time clocks in each department. The motion passed with no opposition from the remaining present board members. Alderman Macklyn Austin, however, was not present.
Although the matter was approved previously on Aug. 11, the action was brought to the table again last week when Alderwoman Elizabeth Thomas questioned the minutes of the Aug. 25 city council meeting.
According to the Aug. 25 board minutes, “there came for consideration: order to add time clocks in each department. No action taken.”
“Why are we saying no action was taken when it was already approved,” Thomas asked, referring to the Aug. 11 meeting.
“Alderman (Charlie) Jenkins put it back on the agenda,” replied City Clerk Kaneilia Williams, who was participating in last week’s meeting telephonically.
But Jenkins said he wanted a correction noted during the Aug. 25 meeting.
“I did not put it back on the agenda, but I asked for a correction,” Jenkins said. “I said everybody should clock in, not just sign in.”
The city’s payroll docket has been a reoccurring topic within the city council for the past several weeks with some city leaders approving payroll but remaining hesitant about the compensatory time and sick leave reports. After being provided with conflicting figures and reports, Jenkins said he continues to have reservations about the whole process.
