It’s been six seasons since the Yazoo County Panthers found themselves on the winning side of the ledger in a basketball game against rival the Yazoo City Indians.
This past Friday night, the Panthers snapped the Indians’ 12-game winning streak with a thrilling 57-55 win that, in traditional City-County fashion, went down to the wire.
Yazoo County stormed out of the gate and outscored Yazoo City 18-10 in the first quarter.
The Indians bounced back with a 17-13 second quarter and the Panthers took a slim 31-27 lead into the intermission.
The Panthers took and 17-12 third quarter advantage into the final period where the Indians outscored them 16-9.
Unfortunately for the Indians, free throw woes cost them a chance to continue their win streak as they missed seven free throws in the final frame, shooting a dismal 4-for-11 from the charity stripe.
Leading the way for the Panthers was Amari Southern with 16 points and Anthony Hudson with 13.
Da’Kwon Reasor added nine, Ke’zyron Young had eight, Ladon Watts and Monterio Hudson had four apiece and Timari Haggard had three.
For the Indians, Keiron Davis and Jacorion Taylor each had 16 points.
Travis Jones chipped in with 14, Chris Gates had seven, and Jaden Rogers had two.
Game two of the rivalry will be played at Yazoo City this Friday.
