Community mourns passing of Mattie Richardson, Yazoo’s first female officer

Mattie Richardson certainly left a mark within the local community with her kind spirit, her positive attitude and professional confidence. Joining the Yazoo City Police Department in 1976, she was hired as the department’s first policewoman. For decades, she served her community, particularly its youth, with respect and dignity.

Born on June 11, 1937, in Bentonia, Mississippi, she was the beloved daughter of the late Maurine Taylor Herrin and Lamar Clarence Herrin. Larine was preceded in death by her sisters, Naomi Rowbury and Nancy Starnes, and her son, Luke Lunceford.

Funeral services will be held on March 22 at 3 p.m. at the Stricklin King Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Steven Howell officiating. Burial will follow at Glenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1:30 p.m. until the funeral service.
