The Yazoo City Federal Correctional Facility is running smoothly with its operation, three weeks after accepting federal inmates from hurricane-ravished Puerto Rico, according to a local spokeswoman.
Marcia Arp, public relations with the local facility, said about the first group of offenders from the Metropolitan Detention Center in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico arrived at the local FCC on Sept. 23.
The offenders, displaced by Hurricane Maria, are being housed at the United States Penitentiary at the Yazoo FCC.
“The institute in Puerto Rico suffered severe damage, and the male offenders are temporary being housed here in Yazoo City,” Arp said.
Arp said the USP can house up to 1,536 male offenders.
“The only offenders being housed at USP are those offenders from Puerto Rico,” Arp said. “We do not have an overload of inmate population.”
Arp also said the local federal complex are not facing any security issues with the additional Puerto Rican inmates.
“The same security required for the administrative facility in Puerto Rico mirrors that at the USP, which was already how we were operating,” Arp said. “There are no security concerns. This is what we do.”
Arp said additional personnel from Puerto Rico were brought on staff to assist during the temporary housing.
