Yazoo County School District adding three new sports opportunities

By JAMIE PATTERSON,

The Yazoo County School District welcomed three new sports to its athletic program for the upcoming 2019-2020 school year.

The district school board approved the addition of middle school baseball, middle school softball and soccer during last week’s meeting.

Superintendent Dr. Ken Barron said he thinks the addition of three new sports areas would prove to be beneficial for the students. Even more extracurricular options are always great progress for the district, he added.

“We have had students mention that they have had an interest,” Barron said.

The development of these new programs will be costly. But Barron said much of the expenses will be a one-time cost to develop the programs. For a seventh through twelfth grade soccer program, it could cost up to $27,000 to cover equipment and uniforms. Barron said that cost, however, will decrease about $15,000 the following year.

Larry Walls, school board member, said the expenses would be well-worth the positive outcomes that come with new sports programs.

“It is good for the kids because it will be molding them for when they get to high school,” Walls said. “They will be better.”
