As the final semester of this school year approaches, Superintendent Dr. Darron Edwards said efforts continue to ensure the majority of the district’s seniors graduate on time.
Having recently completed an assessment of the last third nine weeks, Edwards said there are 132 seniors at Yazoo City High School.
“At this point, we have 80 percent of seniors who are eligible for graduation,” he said. “Presently, our number one goal is our graduation rate.”
Edwards said he is pleased with two new options that have been added within the district, including a dual credit course and a new learning center.
“The new learning center is for our students not eligible to graduate,” Edwards said. “They are also taking online courses.”
Students are also taken to Hinds Community College during the week to earn college credits as part of the dual credit program. Edwards said there are 15 seniors participating in that program, and the operation is going very well.
“We are doing things a lot differently than we did last year to ensure our students graduate on time,” Edwards said.
