It took about two weeks of investigating to uncover what deputies believe is now the truth behind the stabbing that occurred right before Valentine’s Day.
Dewayne McCullum, 30, was charged with two counts of aggravated assault after two women claimed he attacked them.
But those charges have since been dropped.
“We have dropped the charges of aggravated assault,” said Yazoo County Deputy Simon Stubblefield, who has handled the investigation. “But he will be charged with simple assault in the incident.”
Stubblefield said Karen Marie Kirkland, who was initially thought to have been acting in self defense, was charged with aggravated assault after stabbing McCullum.
“We originally thought she (Kirkland) was a victim,” Stubblefield said. “But through a series of interviews and a later confession, she was indeed the perpetrator.”
The incident occurred at Oakhaven Apartments in Yazoo City around 5:30 a.m. on Feb. 11.
