Alderman Dr. Varner said he hopes the city council will shape up in the upcoming new year.
Varner said that although is pleased with the potential arising with the Willie Morris Parkway, he thinks the Board of Mayor and Aldermen have “failed” in some areas over the past year.
“I can’t give up hope in the coming year that we will see that our employees do their work in an orderly fashion,” he said. “The board has pretty much failed on that this year.”
Keeping city employees in line with their responsibilities and duties is part of his New Year’s resolution for the city, Varner said.
“My promise is that we will do better next year,” he said. “This town will be clean and our businesses will thrive. And we will all make better citizens.”
Mayor Diane Delaware reminded the city council of the vital role it plays in the operation of the city.
“I would hope that both (the board) and department heads are held to certain standards,” Delaware said. “Don’t let us off the hook. We need to continue to look for the future and to provide these decisions to ensure Yazoo City has a long and prosperous life.”
Delaware said the board should take that responsibility seriously.
“If any of us chose to avoid that role, then we do our citizens an injustice,” she said. “I ask this board and pray to the Lord Almighty that in the upcoming year, we stay in our lane.”
