An elderly Yazoo County man was charged with molesting a female child within his neighborhood.
Charles Spiars, 74, was charged with molestation after he was accused of touching a 13-year-old girl who lived in his Tinsley neighborhood.
Terry Gann, chief investigator with the Yazoo County Sheriff’s Department, said the victim reported the incident to an adult who then notified authorities.
“We continue to speak with others to make sure there are no other victims,” Gann said. “But from what we can gather at this time, it was a one-time, isolated incident.”
Spiars was later released on a $10,000 bond, which was requested by investigators.
Gann said there are guidelines that are followed when requesting bail amounts that are based on a number of factors. Those factors include criminal history, the nature of the crime and the suspect’s residential history, employment history and mental condition.
Based on the guidelines, Gann said Spiars had no criminal record, has lived in Yazoo County his whole life and has a medical condition.
“The allegation is horrible, but we have to take those factors into consideration when requesting bonds,” Gann said.
Many other suspects accused of sexual assaults receive larger bail amounts based on their criminal history, the violent nature of the crime and the time frame or length of the alleged abuse.
