The man suspected of firing shots at the Wardell Leach Recreational Complex Thursday remains on the run, and there is a $1,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.
Myquon N. Carter is wanted on charges of drive-by shooting, stalking, domestic violence and discharging a firearm within the city limits.
Police Chief Ron Sampson said that investigators have received tips about Carter’s location, but none of those tips has led to an arrest yet. Sampson said Carter has a history of trouble in Yazoo City.
Shots were fired from a vehicle in the park while two youth baseball games were being played and girls softball practices were being held. No one was injured.
An off-duty officer was present at the park and pursued the vehicle occupied by the shooter as it fled while the two officers on duty patrolling the city responded. Those officers were provided a description of the vehicle from dispatchers receiving calls from 911.
“The people who called 911 did an excellent job of describing the vehicle and the shooter,” Sampson said.
A vehicle fleeing the scene was stopped by police. One suspect was arrested, and another, believed to be Myquon Carter, fled on foot.
Baseball games were stopped until police officers arrived. Security will be on the property for next week’s games.
Yazoo County Emergency Management Director Jack Willingham took charge of the scene until officers were able to respond.
“We pulled everybody off the fields, and all of our people were secured,” Willingham said.
Willingham and District 3 Supervisor Willie “Deuce” Wright, who was serving as an umpire for one of the baseball games at the complex, went to the basketball courts near where the shots were fired to make sure there were no injuries or further altercations.
“It was probably over 20 minutes before a police officer was on the scene at the park, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t respond to the call,” Willingham said. “They were responding to the threat. We already knew that no one was hurt at the park. We just weren’t going to let the players get back out on the field until an officer got there.”
Wright said that when officers arrived, they cleared the basketball court area.
