The Yazoo County School District Board will begin its search for a new superintendent, following the announcement of Becky Fisher's retirement on June 30.
The position of school superintendent is no longer an elected position, but will now be appointed by the county school board.
According to a newly implemented order from the state, “...in the event that a vacancy in the office of the superintendent of schools elected at the November 2015 general election shall occur before January 1, 2019, the office of superintendent of schools shall immediately become an appointed position, and the local school board shall appoint the superintendent of the school district.”
"In the next couple of weeks, the board will be going to the Mississippi School Board Association, and working through Dr. Michael Waldrop, who will help them with the superintendent search," said Fisher.
In order to be considered for this position, Fisher said that the candidates must be trained and must qualify under standards set by the state legislature.
Once a pool of qualified applicants is created, the board, along with Waldrop will conduct interviews and make a final decision.
"The person who comes into Yazoo County must be a good fit," said Fisher. "We are a rural school district, not a municipal district, and it is a major difference."
