With the upcoming city elections, there is a new permit fee in place for candidates’ off-site temporary signs.
Russ Carter, the city’s code enforcer, recently brought the sign ordinance to the attention of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen.
“There are perhaps several candidates who will be running for office, including maybe some of you,” he told the city council. “I wanted you to be aware of the new sign ordinance that you adopted in January of 2016.”
The sign ordinance states that “temporary off-site signs are required to have permits (including political campaign signs, etc.) $25 to help pay for sign cleanup after the event. No limit on number of signs. Must notify Building Official first.”
Carter said the public works department typically picks the political signs up after most elections.
“That is the reason why this is in place,” Carter said. “Each political candidate will have to get a permit. You can put out however many signs you want to put out. But there is a one-time permit fee.”
