Margie Vaughan, who was the first female superintendent of education in Yazoo County, died Sunday at age 93.
Vaughan taught in both the Yazoo County and Yazoo City school districts during her career before successfully running as the superintendent of Yazoo County Schools in 1987.
“I can offer the leadership necessary for a productive school system,” Vaughan said when announcing her candidacy in The Yazoo Herald.
She went on to win the election by more than 1,000 votes.
Vaughan led the county schools through some difficult times during her tenure, including tight budgets and legal disputes with the city school district. She also served as the county superintendent when the Holly Bluff district merged with Yazoo County due to dwindling enrollment numbers in Holly Bluff.
Vaughan remained active in the community and at First Presbyterian Church after retiring from education.
She is survived by her daughters, Linda Vaughan Barnett and Melanie Vaughan; a son, Reece Vaughan; three grandsons and six great-grandchildren.
