Ricks Memorial Library will be hosting a Learn at Lunch lecture series during the month of July on Mississippi History to mark the state's bicentennial anniversary.
Every Friday in July will feature a guest speaker from notable organizations to share insight into the past 200 years in Mississippi's history.
The public is invited to attend the lectures in the Mississippi Chemical Conference Center in the rear portion of the library, and attendees are asked to bring their lunch and listen from noon until 1p.m.
Each lecture will last approximately one hour, with thirty minutes assigned to the lecture or presentation, and thirty minutes for a question and answer session.
Friday, July 7, will feature a presentation from guest speaker Mark Henry, the Governor's Appointee to the Mississippi Bicentennial Commission. Henry will be speaking on how Mississippi grew into statehood, the opening of the new Civil Rights Museum and Mississippi History Museums, as well as sharing how the Mississippi Bicentennial Commission is helping communities host their own anniversary celebrations.
On Friday, July 14, Lance S. Harris, the Site Director of the Grand Village of the Natchez Indians, will give a presentation about the Native Americans of Mississippi, primarily the Natchez Indians, their burial mounds and the first encounters they had with French settlers in South Mississippi.
On Friday, July 21, Amy Genke, a Supervisory Park Ranger over Interpretation for the Natchez Trace Parkway, will give a presentation with artifacts about the history of the Natchez Trace and how it helped Mississippi as it grew into statehood.
On Friday, July 28, representatives from The Delta Center for Culture and Learning from Delta State University, will give a presentation on the cultural heritage of the Mississippi Delta over the last 200 years.
Each lecture is free and open to the public. parents, children, and young adults are encouraged to attend.
The Mississippi Chemical Conference Center in the back of the Library is also handicap accessible.
