Although votes will be taken next week, one nomination to the city school board has requested that his name be pulled from the pool.
The Board of Mayor and Aldermen made nominations last week in the replacement of Deborah Crook on the Yazoo City Municipal School Board.
Former mayor Wardell Leach was nominated by Alderman Dr. Jack Varner.
Leach contacted The Herald on Wednesday to announce that he will be withdrawing his name from the selection.
“After thinking it over, I want to withdraw my name,” Leach said.
Leach admits that he willingly accepted the nominations during the last city council meeting. But his feelings have changed over the last few days.
Varner also made a second nomination with Lynn McCallister.
Alderman Ron Johnson nominated Sr Jonathan Rucker. Alderman Gregory Robertson nominated Vanessa Crowder.
Leach said his relation to Alderman Johnson also steered him towards removing his name from the appointment.
“But I would like to endorse Vanessa Crowder for the position,” he said. “She would make a good board member.”
The city council will vote on the nominations during its next board meeting, which will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the police department boardroom.
