State officials have recognized the former Mississippi Chemical Corporation as pioneering fertilizer plant and will be given a state historical marker.
The Board of Trustees of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History approved the new marker, which was sponsored by the Yazoo County Historical Society. The state historical marker program recognizes significant people, events and movements across Mississippi.
The Mississippi Chemical Corporation was the nation’s first farmer-owned nitrogen fertilizer plant. Organized in 1948 under the leadership of Farmer Bureau Federation director Owen Cooper, the business had grown and expanded overseas before it collapsed in 2004.
Other markers approved locally include the Yazoo County Courthouse, also sponsored by the Historical Society.
