Internet access for residents off Mississippi 16 from U.S. 49 to Benton will get decidedly better after recent action taken by Yazoo City’s Public Service Commission (PSC).
In the Jan. 12 PSC meeting, the commissioners approved a request to attach equipment to the Broadway water tank, which Mobile Communications hopes will enable the Internet signal to reach the new Mississippi 16 areas, including residences in Fairfield Court, Eastbrook and Place Drive.
According to PSC Manager Jimmy Wever, there is an unused antenna near the water tank, upon which Mobile Communications officials have requested permission to install their equipment “to jump the signal over the hill,” Wever said.
“They offered to put that tower (antenna) back up at their expense, and provide (PSC) with Internet service and the possibility of some future … communications using their tower if we would allow them to put the dish on there to boost the signal over the hill out to that area (off new Mississippi 16), where they’re going to erect another tower,” Wever said.
In other PSC business, the commissioners:
• Rejected a bid for the sale of 110,500 gallons of diesel fuel.
• Declared 18 aerators formerly used at the wastewater treatment plant as surplus and voted to advertise for bids for the aerators.
• Heard CPA Ardis Russell review the 2015 preliminary audit. Russell said that while his firm had completed work on the audit, he could not certify the Sept. 30, 2015 financial statements until the Mississippi Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS) audit is completed. “As soon as the PERS 06/30/2015 audit is completed, we can complete the PSC’s 09/30/2015 audit,” Russell wrote in a letter to the PSC commissioners. He said that it is thought that PERS’ audit will be completed by Jan. 29, 2016.
