A special call meeting of the Yazoo City Housing Authority began with a heated discussion between a housing commissioner and city alderman.
The Yazoo City Housing Authority Board of Commissioners called for a special meeting Monday to discuss financial issues, the agency’s location and bringing in more attorneys for the upcoming multi-million-dollar Rental Assistance Demonstration project.
Ward 3 Alderman Sir Johnathan Rucker was in the audience before the meeting began Monday afternoon. Housing Commissioner Mamie Williams said she was curious why Rucker was attending the housing meeting since he recuses himself from every housing issue with the Board of Mayor and Aldermen.
Since issues with the Housing Authority began several months ago, Rucker has never voted on any action concerning the entity during city council meetings. He has always recused himself from the voting process.
“You are here, but you always recuse yourself from housing (business) at the board meeting,” Williams said.
“I have a right to be here,” Rucker replied.
The conversation between Williams and Rucker continued, with Williams reminding Rucker he could be removed if it led to a disruption.
“Please remove me,” Rucker replied. “Grown people acting like little kids. If you want to put that in the paper, I don’t have a problem with it.”
At that point, Rucker began to live stream the meeting on social media before he left the meeting entirely.
