Betty Reed, former local housing director for over three decades, died this week.
Reed retired from the Yazoo City Housing Authority last June after 33 years of service. After her retirement, she shifted roles as the executive director of the Gateway Community Development Cooperation.
Housing was always a passion for Reed, who told The Herald following her retirement that she still wanted to see local housing opportunities flourish for her community.
“This is home to me,” she said, in that interview. “I want to see the community continue to grow. Housing has grown to be a passion of mine because of the need. I don’t think people understand the housing need in the city. If I could help create some affordable housing, it would be one of greatest asset to the city itself.”
Funeral services will be held today, Jan. 12, at 11 a.m. at St. Matthew COGIC in Yazoo City with burial following at Glenwood Cemetery.
