Two suspects were arrested Monday night after they allegedly attempted to steal shopping carts full of food from a local grocery store.
Charles Edwards and Donnell Hodges, both of Lexington, were charged with felony shoplifting.
Police Chief Ronald Sampson said one of his officers was patrolling the parking lot of Save-A-Lot around 6 p.m. when a store employee flagged him down.
“The employee told the officer that the store was being robbed, and pointed out the vehicle that fled the parking lot,” Sampson said. “The vehicle was heading to Highway 49, towards Highway 3 when officers began to pursue them.”
Sampson said the suspects eventually wrecked their vehicle and abandoned it. But they were quickly detained by officers.
“No weapon was displayed during this incident,” Sampson said. “It seems the suspect had managed to load one cart of stolen food into their vehicle before returning inside to attempt to steal another cart filled with food. At some point, a store employee confronted them and was assaulted, pushed down, during the altercation.”
