The Willie Morris Parkway is not open for traffic yet, and if you drive on it you are breaking the law.
Mayor Diane Delaware said people moving barricades and driving on the parkway is becoming an increasing problem, and the parkway is still under construction.
“Yesterday I got up from my home, and I put the barricades back,” Delaware said. “It was probably the tenth time that I have done that. I put the barricades back with a police officer actually sitting on the parkway so somebody else could have put those barricades back. I think it is very obvious, quite frankly there are no uncertain terms, that the parkway is not open.”
Delaware said some tickets have been written for drivers illegally using the parkway, and they have complained about it.
“There are some complaints about people being ticketed or people thinking they have a right to drive on the parkway, but there are barricades up,” Delaware said. “It’s very easy to tell that people have been moving those barricades.”
Delaware said the municipal court should not allow violators to get away without penalties.
“I’m very concerned, and this is an unusual thing for me to say, that our courts are dismissing these tickets,” Delaware said. “I’m asking our police to please take pictures and to prove that this parkway is not open.”
Delaware said there will be a public announcement when the parkway is open.
Construction of the parkway has extended beyond the deadline. The contractor is currently being fined for each day that work continues past the deadline.
“We’re going to work with the CVB to promote our train station,” Delaware said.
Delaware said Yazoo will also compete for a grant to build a train station that would have to be over 300,000 square feet.
