The city’s Democratic runoff primary election results were certified this week by the local election commission.
The second Democratic primary was held on Feb. 27 with incumbents Mayor Diane Delaware and Ward 4 Alderman Aubry Brent Jr. earning the majority vote.
The results are now official and account for all votes cast, including machines, absentee, curbside and affidavit ballots.
Delaware earned 53.5 percent of the vote, with 994 votes. Her opponent Joseph Thomas Jr. earned 46.4 percent of the vote, with a total of 864 votes.
Brent earned 53.1 percent of the vote with Ward 4 voters, totaling to 290 votes. His opponent Joe Freeman earned 46.7 percent of the vote, with a total of 255 votes.
Delaware will now face Independent Theodis Freeman in the general election on April 2.
There have been two candidates who have publicly said they are challenging the Democratic primary. Thomas said faulty machines were to blame. And Ward 3 Alderman Gregory Robertson composed a petition challenging the election, citing faulty machines, ballot box security and improper procedures among other issues.
In a previous article, The Yazoo Herald incorrectly stated that Robertson’s petition was filed in Chancery Court. However, it was merely notarized in that office.
Election challenges are to be filed in Yazoo County Circuit Court within 20 days of the election date. As of press time, no official challenge had been filed by any candidate.
