Yazoo County is applying for emergency bridge and road repair funds from the Mississippi Department of Transportation for four bridges.
The bridges include Pritchard Avenue in Bentonia, Anding Oil City Road bridge, Gordon Road and Powell Road.
The Anding Oil City Road bridge crossing the railroad tracks, probably the most traveled of the four bridges, has long been in need of repair. The county has had difficulty obtaining the required right-of-way and getting cooperation from the railroad for years.
County Engineer Larry Dixon said that grant funding will not exceed the amount of the application or the lowest bid, whichever is less.
In other business during last week’s Board of Supervisors meeting:
Tommy Irvine, who was recently elected Yazoo County Tax Collector, told the board he is looking forward to working with the county.
“I trust and believe that we will have a very good relationship,” Irvine said. “I want to get on the same page and serve our taxpayers the best we can.”
Irvine said he is coming onto the job during a busy period and he needs to get his office fully staffed.
“I want to have the right people in place so that this will go smoothly without any hiccups,” Irvine said.
“This is a very important job, and we want you to be successful,” said District 2 Supervisor David Berry.
“We’ll do whatever we can to help you,” said District 3 Supervisor Willie “Deuce” Wright.
“You have some good staff members over there who already know what they’re doing, and you can come to this board anytime you need to,” said District 1 Supervisor Van Foster.
The board approved the establishment of a private cemetery on property owned by Greg Moseley. Moseley said that the cemetery already existed, but he wanted to make sure that the cemetery was properly designated after he bought the property.
