The Yazoo County Board of Supervisors made recent comments in opposition to a potential tax increase by the Yazoo County School District. But school leaders said there was never a possibility of raising taxes on their behalf.
“Despite the comments that were made, we are not asking for a tax increase,” said Superintendent Dr. Ken Barron. “Our taxes are staying flat in Yazoo County. I don’t know where that information came from. Our taxes have been flat for five years, and we will continue this for another year.”
County supervisors were very vocal in a July meeting that they were opposed to any effort by the Yazoo County School District to raise taxes during the upcoming fiscal year. Board President Cobie Collins said the school district would be requesting a millage increase.
“I want the public to know who’s raising taxes,” Collins said, during last month’s meeting.
But Barron said the district was never going to ask for a millage increase, and he is unsure where the county board got its information.
“I have even pulled the millage rate for surrounding districts,” Barron said. “We are actually between nine and 11 mills lower than Yazoo City and almost 12 mills lower than Madison.”
