The Yazoo County Board of Supervisors will be purchasing the needed materials to improve the Yazoo City Girls Softball fields at the Wardell Leach Recreational Complex.
Alan Turner, a concerned parent, appeared before the county leaders with an issue he said he has complained about for years.
"The first time I came was eight years ago," Turner said. “It’s the same problem. The fields are terrible."
Turner admits the condition of the two softball fields have nothing to do with Sedric Hudson, parks director.
"It has nothing to do with the new park director," Turner said. “He’s great, and he tries."
Jason Patterson, publisher of The Yazoo Herald, also spoke to the county board about the condition of the fields.
"I am here today as Elsie Patterson's father, not the newspaper man,” Patterson said. "I have talked to some other parents who are only interested in fixing the problem."
Patterson said he spoke with Chuck McGinty, who works at a local engineering firm and is also involved in the league, and discovered that about $4,000 worth of crushed brick could resolve the issues at the two fields.
"Chuck even volunteered his services to set the grades so that the fields would drain properly," Patterson said. "We need the special topsoil that would change the composition of the soil. The dirt that they have right now holds too much water. And when it dries up, it has clods."
Supervisor Cobie Collins said the county would haul dirt to the fields to level them out. He also suggested the county contribute $4,000 for crushed brick to improve the fields.
Supervisor Willie Wright said work has been done to the other fields, and he would like to see the softball fields receive the same treatment.
