The city of Yazoo City will be searching for a new street superintendent after its former director has been moved into another position.
Former director Danny Miller, who has worked with the street department for over two decades, was recently moved into a new position by the Board of Mayor and Aldermen.
Alderman Aubry Brent Jr. said the board is working out the final details for Miller, who will be handling “security and inventory.”
“A new position was created for Danny, and he will be in charge of security and inventory,” Brent said. “He will also be working directly under the mayor now.”
Brent said Miller will also be on-hand to assist building inspector Russ Carter when needed.
Miller’s move was made during a recent city council meeting on a 3 to 2 vote, with Aldermen Ron Johnson and Gregory Robertson in opposition.
Miller received heavy public criticism by the city council during its January meeting for the incompletion of the city’s sign replacement project.
“Basically, we gave him 90 days to correct a lot of things,” Brent said. “Those things were not corrected during that time period. We made it clear that if those things were not done in 90 days, we would make adjustments.”
Brent said there were also errors involving the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, which also fell under Miller’s direction.
“We were being charged from $5,000 to $12,000 in fines for discrepancies they (MDEQ) found,” Brent said. “Ultimately, the buck stopped with him (Miller).”
The city will be advertising to fill the street superintendent position.
