After the school trustees received a certified letter requesting their resignation, the city council made nominations to the Yazoo City Municipal School Board.
Four nominations were made during the Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting Monday afternoon. The appointment to replace Deborah Crook on the school board will be approved at the next city council meeting.
Alderman Aubry Brent Jr. made the motion to send the school trustees a letter during the last city council meeting, requesting their resignation. He, along with remaining city board members, have been very vocal with the direction of the local school district, which they have called a continued failure.
In an effort to start with a fresh new school board, the city council has pursued replacing the current trustees. As of press time, no school trustees have announced any resignations from the school board.
“Time is of the essence,” Brent said, this week. “If you can, put (a new appointment) in place so they can be involved in the selection of the next superintendent.”
The process of selecting the new superintendent will resume on Feb. 17 with the top candidates being brought to the table for interviews.
Brent, who has a family member employed by the municipal school district, excused himself from this week’s nomination process.
“Y’all do the right thing,” Brent said, leaving the board room.
Alderman Gregory Robertson nominated Vanessa Crowder.
Alderman Dr. Jack Varner made two nominations with Lynn McCallister and Wardell Leach.
Alderman Ron Johnson nominated Sir Jonathan Rucker.
The city board will vote on the nominations during its Feb. 22 meeting.
