A man suspected of burglarizing a local church allegedly attempted to escape from a deputy as he was being brought back into Yazoo County in custody.
Chadwick Johnson, 24, was charged with burglary of a church, attempted escape and disorderly conduct.
Terry Gann, chief investigator with the Yazoo County Sheriff’s Department, said Johnson was wanted in connection to burglarizing St. Peter Church on Highway 432.
“Sound equipment was stolen from the church,” Gann said. “We have recovered some of the equipment, and the rest of it was taken to a pawn shop in Canton.”
Johnson was apprehended on unrelated charges by the Durant Police Department. Local investigators touched base with Durant officers about Johnson’s arrest.
“Johnson turned himself into the Durant Police Department, and they then held him for us to bring him back to Yazoo on the church burglary charges. The suspect was in my vehicle on our way back to Yazoo when he tried to jump out the truck. He didn’t make it out, however.”
Johnson remained in jail as of press time.
