Two Yazoo County men are behind bars after leading deputies on a chase following a house burglary Monday afternoon. Bradley Platt, 39, was charged with felony fleeing, burglary, possession of stolen property and resisting arrest. Deyton Worthy, 18, was charged with burglary and possession of stolen property.
Terry Gann, chief investigator with the Yazoo County Sheriff’s Department, said the two men attracted the attention of local authorities after they were spotted selling potentially stolen items.
“An off-duty deputy noticed them with the trunk of their car open, possibly selling items in Little Yazoo,” Gann said. “That drew our attention, and we starting looking out for any burglaries in the area.” Gann said photographs were shortly sent to an off-duty deputy of two rifles that were purchased from Platt and Worthy. “We still didn’t know a burglary had occurred because one had not been reported,” Gann said. Afterwards, an off-duty constable noticed a home with the front door wide open. Suspicious, he notified deputies to arrive at the scene. “A neighbor gave the constable a number for the homeowner," Gann said. "He then reached out to the homeowner to let him know about his front door being open. The neighbor asked the constable to check it out."
Gann said upon entering the home, the constable noticed a back window had been broken. "Once deputies arrived, it was determined it was a burglary,” Gann said. “Surveillance cameras inside the home also had still shots of both Platt and Worthy breaking into the house.”
At that point, a county-wide search began for the two men. They were soon found in the Bentonia area at a truck stop. “They then fled the truck stop, heading through Bentonia and down Highway 433 towards Benton,” Gann said. “They jumped a railroad track in Bentonia that we believed knocked a hole in their oil pan because the car came to a stop before we even got to Scotland Road." Gann said Platt was the driver of the vehicle. "Upon stopping, Platt jumped out of the vehicle and ran into the woods,” Gann said."We pursued him and apprehended shortly afterward. Worthy was apprehended before he even got out of the car," Gann said he believes there are other subjects involved in this case, and the investigation continues.
