Since one suspect’s career as a burglar isn’t working out, perhaps he should try America’s Funniest Home Videos.
Surveillance footage shows a comedy of errors when a burglary suspect looks directly in the camera after removing a trash bag off his face and takes a spill after grabbing a cash register.
Shortly after the potential America’s Funniest Home Video clip, officers arrested the suspect in his home, wearing the same shirt he had on in the video footage.
Derrick Taylor was charged with commercial burglary, trespassing and disturbing the peace.
Cpt. William Nevels, with the Yazoo City Police Department, said Taylor was arrested in connection to the burglary of the New York Express gas station on Jerry Clower Boulevard.
“He entered by busting through the glass front door,” Nevels said. “He came inside the store with a trash bag over his head, which he removed several times, looking directly into the surveillance camera.”
Nevels said several items were stolen, including the cash register.
“He grabbed the cash register, but he didn’t realize it was still hooked up,” Nevels said. “He fell down pretty hard, but he got up and managed to take it.”
Officers immediately recognized Taylor, who has a lengthy criminal history, from the video footage.
“Taylor has a criminal background that our officers are familiar with,” Nevels said. “They instantly knew it was Taylor on the video”
They arrived at his house, and found Taylor with the same shirt he had on during the burglary.
The cash register was also recovered by officers shortly after Taylor’s arrest.
