Eddie Charles Spencer became a criminal at just six years old.
The Hollandale native spent much of his life going in and out of the juvenile justice system before being convicted of armed robbery and attempted murder at age 17.
In 1982, Spencer was serving time at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman when he became a Christian. Accepting Christ proved to be a life changing experience.
Today Spencer is a pastor in the United Methodist Church and has published two books, Inmate 46857 and Put Out the Fire – Controlling Your Anger Before it Destroys Your Life.
Spencer will speak at the Yazoo Community Complex on Friday at 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, and young people are particularly encouraged to attend.
Ward 4 Alderman Aubry Brent Jr. said he recently read Inmate 46857, and he is excited about the opportunity for young Yazooans to hear Spencer’s message.
“I could not put this book down,” Brent said. “His life exemplifies so many young people in this community.”
Students who have read Inmate 46857 have been excited about meeting Spencer.
Brent said Yazoo City residents should make every effort to bring young people to this event, especially troubled youth.
Youth attending the event will also receive a free slice of pizza.
Spencer is also schedule to speak at Yazoo City High School at 2 p.m.
The Yazoo Community Complex is in the auditorium next to the Boys & Girls Club.
