There are a total of 17 candidates running for city posts in the upcoming primary election, which will be held in February.
The qualifying deadline was last Friday, and party officials will be verifying candidates’ packets to ensure they meet all necessary qualifications.
All current members of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen are seeking to remain in their posts this election year.
Mayor
Six candidates will be vying for the mayor’s seat, with incumbent Mayor Diane Delaware seeking re-election. Other Democratic candidates include former mayor McArthur Straughter, Peter Gower, Calvin Thomas and Joseph Thomas Jr.
Theodis Freeman is running as an independent candidate.
Ward 1
Within Ward 1, Alderman Ron Johnson will be running to keep his post with Democrat E.L. Hendrix running against him.
Ward 2
Ward 2 Alderman Dr. Jack Varner will be vying for his seat against former police chief and Democrat Andre Lloyd.
Ward 3
Three candidates will be vying for the Ward 3 position with incumbent Gregory Robertson against Democrats Jammie McCoy and Sir Johnathan Rucker.
Ward 4
Alderman Aubry Brent Jr. will be looking to keep his Ward 4 seat against Democrats Joe Freeman, Randall Granderson and Lola Smith.
The primary election will be held on Feb. 6 with a potential run-off election on Feb. 27.
The general election will be held on April 2.
