Former Yazoo City police officer and former Tchula Chief of Police Samuel Carter pleaded guilty to Misdemeanor Assault of a minor victim this week.
Carter was initially indicted and charged with Felonious Child Abuse in the August 2019 incident.
According to the district attorney’s office, the offense involved a minor student of Yazoo County High School who was pushed into the girls bathroom and choked by Carter, who was the Yazoo County School Resource Officer at the time of the incident. Prosecutors said that in an attempt to cover his own criminal conduct, Carter had the minor child arrested on false charges. Carter’s offense was witnessed by others who were present in the Girls Bathroom at the time.
Sentenced to one year in the custody of Mississippi Department of Corrections, Carter’s sentence was suspended, and he was placed on one year of probation.
As conditions of his guilty plea and probation, Carter paid $5,000 restitution to the minor victim at his sentencing and an additional $5,000 shall be paid over the course of his one-year probation for a combined total of $10,000.
The victim and the victim’s family were in agreement with Carter’s plea.
