After nearly three decades in law enforcement, Police Chief Andre Lloyd announces his retirement from the Yazoo City Police Department.
As the city council prepares to take on interviews for the post, Lloyd’s last official day with the local police force will be Monday.
“It was time,” he said. “Sometimes you can’t stay in one place forever – even if you would like to. But there are other things I want to achieve. There was no better time than now to make the move.”
Lloyd joined the Yazoo City Police Department in 1991 as a patrolman, being promoted to lieutenant 13 years later. Working his way up the ranks, he continued to climb to the post of assistant police chief.
Serving as interim police chief twice in his career, the Board of Mayor and Aldermen appointed him as police chief in November of 2016.
“It has been adventurous,” Lloyd said of his career. “I would like to thank Chief Jimmy Fleming for giving me the opportunity to start my career at the Yazoo City Police Department.”
Lloyd said he will most certainly miss law enforcement. Aside from friendships and building a career, he enjoyed serving the public and giving back to his community.
“What I will remember the most is the day I took the oath to serve and protect,” he said. “And it was also about helping citizens and teaching them about the laws. A lot of them didn’t know the law, but by enlightening them they know what they can and cannot do.”
With a son at Jackson State University, Lloyd plans to travel with the football team this season to watch his son on the field.
And, of course, he will continue to cook. Lloyd’s cooking talent is well known in the community.
“I would like to look into putting my barbecue place back up for business,” he said, with a smile. “I will continue to bake cakes and do other cooking. I’m still going to cook.”
“I don’t want to leave,” Lloyd added, looking around his office. “But I just need to enjoy some family time, some ‘me’ time.”
