The new Board of Mayor and Aldermen quickly got to work Monday afternoon with various appointments to the city’s departments.
Following the ceremony swearing in the new board, the city council made six appointments and named the next mayor pro tem.
The city of Yazoo City’s mayor pro tem will be Alderwoman Elizabeth Thomas. The appointment was made on a 3-2 vote with Mayor Macklyn Austin and Alderwoman Patti Taylor-Wright in opposition.
Lilli Evans-Bass was reappointed as the board attorney on a 3-2 vote with Thomas and Alderman Deyoung Haymer in opposition.
Otha Gilmore has been serving as the city’s interim public works director following the retirement of Robert Green last month. Gilmore was appointed as the official department head unanimously.
The city welcomes a new sexton of Glenwood Cemetery with the appointment of Eric Warren.
Kaneilia Williams remains the city clerk on a 4-1 vote with Thomas in opposition.
Michael Langston will serve as the city’s new fire chief. The post was temporarily held by Kenny Washington following the retirement of Ricky Harris last month.
Glen Parker was replaced as the city’s building inspector by Arnold Woods. Previously, Woods served as the city’s building inspector for seven months before he resigned last year.
