Mississippi Transportation Commission Chairman Willie Simmons has announced updates to several Mississippi Department of Transportation projects in western Mississippi, including Yazoo County.
“As we enter prime maintenance and construction season, we’re pleased to provide the following updates on projects across western Mississippi,” said Commissioner Simmons. “This amount of progress shows your tax dollars hard at work improving our infrastructure.”
State Route 16/149 bridge replacements continue in Yazoo County
A project to replace three bridges on State Route 16/149 over the Yazoo River Floodway Channels continues making headway. The work requires the complete closure of SR 16/149 between W. Leeve Rd. and Whittington East Levee Rd. in Yazoo County.
The contractor has completed Bridges A and C and is in the process of setting the structural steel for Bridge B.
“We appreciate your patience that allows crews to get these bridges replaced as quickly and efficiently as possible,” said Simmons. “Residents and businesses will have a safer set of bridges to carry loads across SR 16/149.”
Remaining work is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. The $27.9 million project was awarded to Key, LLC of Madison.
Major U.S. 49 pavement restoration underway in Yazoo County
A project calling for the restoration of 11 miles of U.S. 49 continues from 0.8 miles north of Old Highway 49 to the State Route 16/U.S. 49 frontage road just south of Yazoo County High School.
Crews are removing and replacing island pavement, performing curb and gutter work at local road intersections and drainage correction work. Paving crews are paving the second of four lifts of asphalt on mainline U.S. 49.
The $29 million project was awarded to APAC-MS. The project is expected to wrap up next fall.
