Mississippi Transportation Commission Chairman Willie Simmons has announced updates to several Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) projects in western Mississippi.
“This is an exciting time for the Mississippi Delta region as long-term projects, including the U.S. 82 Greenville Bypass, are nearing completion. We also have lots of work progressing on I-20 in Warren County,” said Commissioner Simmons. “I’m proud of the progress that has been made in the western part of our state in recent years. It shows your tax dollars being put to good use, improving our infrastructure.”
State Route 16/149 bridge replacements make headway in Yazoo County
A project to replace three bridges on State Route 16/149 over the Yazoo River Floodway Channels is making headway. The work requires the complete closure of SR 16/149 between W. Leeve Rd. and Whittington East Levee Rd. in Yazoo County.
Crews are completing erosion control measures. Bridges A and C are complete, and crews are preparing to set beams on Bridge B.
“We understand that replacing these bridges has been quite the hardship on residents and businesses in the area, but soon you will have a safer set of bridges to carry loads across SR 16/149,” said Simmons. “I am happy that we were able to get them done during the same closure timeframe, instead of three separate closure periods, ensuring these bridges are replaced as quickly as possible.”
Major U.S. 49 pavement restoration in Yazoo County
A project is underway calling for the restoration of 11 miles of U.S. 49 from 0.8 miles north of Old Highway 49 to the State Route 16/U.S. 49 frontage road just south of Yazoo County High School.
All median crossovers have been paved. Crews are placing shoulder gravel on the northbound side before continuing to pave the mainline.
The $29 million project was awarded to APAC-MS. The project is expected to wrap up next fall.
The completion timeframe is dependent upon weather conditions and water levels. The contract allocates spring 2026 as the completion date. MDOT will update the public on the timeframe this fall. The $27.9 million project was awarded to Key, LLC of Madison.
State Route 3 roundabout construction in Yazoo County
Construction of a roundabout at the intersection of State Route 3 and Willie Morris Parkway in Yazoo County is now underway.
Drainage and dirt work are nearly complete. Crews will then remove permanent stripe and place temporary stripe in the roundabout configuration.
The nearly $4 million project was awarded to Simmons Erosion Control, Inc. of Lake. Work is on track to be complete by next spring.
State Route 149 and U.S. 49W bridge repairs in Yazoo County
Bridge repairs on State Route 149 over Broad Lake and on U.S. 49W over the Yazoo River Bridge are underway in Yazoo County. Crews have completed the hybrid polymer overlay on the U.S. 49W bridges and are stocking material for the Broad Lake bridge.
The $8.5 million project was awarded to Gibson & Associates, Inc. of Balch Springs, Texas. The project is on track to be completed by fall 2026.
“As you can see, lots of work is underway across the district,” said Simmons. “Please stay vigilant when approaching a work zone. Slow down and avoid distractions so that we can get this work wrapped up as quickly and efficiently as possible.”
