Mississippi Transportation Commission Chairman Willie Simmons has announced updates on several Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) projects in western Mississippi, including Yazoo County.
“As we work our way to the spring maintenance season, progress continues across western Mississippi,” said Commissioner Simmons. “These infrastructure improvement projects show the department’s commitment to maximizing your tax dollars and strengthening safety and mobility across the region.”
State Route 16/149 bridge replacements near completion in Yazoo County
A project to replace three bridges on State Route 16/149 over the Yazoo River Floodway Channels is nearing completion. The work requires the complete closure of SR 16/149 between W. Leeve Rd. and Whittington East Levee Rd. in Yazoo County.
Bridges A and C are complete. On Bridge B, crews are forming the bridge deck and transporting materials to form the approaches to the correct elevation.
“This project has been a long time coming and I’m happy to report that we are nearing the finish line. Please continue using alternate routes as we work to wrap up this project as quickly as possible,” said Simmons. “Very soon, we will have a safer set of bridges to carry loads across SR 16 and 149.”
Remaining work is on track to wrap up this spring. The $27.9 million project was awarded to Key, LLC of Madison.
Major U.S. 49 pavement restoration makes headway in Yazoo County
A project calling for the restoration of 11 miles of U.S. 49 from 0.8 miles north of Old Highway 49 to the State Route 16/U.S. 49 frontage road just north of Yazoo County High School is making headway.
Surface lift of asphalt is being placed on the northbound lanes as weather permits. The median crossovers have been paved. Clearing efforts continue.
The $29 million project was awarded to APAC-MS of Jackson. The project is expected to wrap up this fall.
State Route 149 and U.S. 49W bridge repairs continue in Yazoo County
A project that provides bridge repairs on SR 149 over Broad Lake and on U.S. 49W over the Yazoo River is underway.
Bridge items are complete on the U.S. 49W Yazoo River bridge. Crews have completed the bridge overlay on the eastbound lane of the SR 149 Broad Lake bridge and have completed hydro-demolition of the westbound lane with bridge deck pours next.
The $8.5 million project is being handled by Gibson & Associates, Inc. It is on track to be completed by fall 2026.
State Route 3 roundabout construction complete in Yazoo County
Construction of a roundabout at the intersection of State Route 3 and Willie Morris Parkway in Yazoo County is complete.
The nearly $4 million project was awarded to Simmons Erosion Control, Inc. of Lake.
