As the city of Yazoo City nears the end of its fiscal year, city leaders said they are extremely impressed with the improvement of garbage collection services.
Mayor Diane Delaware said that although there have been a few complaints, that number has significantly decreased with its contract with WastePro. That contract will come before the city board again in March.
“It is important that we look at what has been done well and the areas that we want to see improvement,” Delaware said, during Monday’s board meeting. “Solid waste collection has been exceptionally well since we went into the contract. It has been a really good experience for Yazoo City, and I can speak to that because there has been a substantial reduction in the amount of calls and complaints that we have received.”
Delaware said the contract with WastePro has also saved the city money with a decrease in equipment maintenance and labor.
During this week’s meeting, Alderman Andre Lloyd said he did, however, have some complaints from residents in the Enchanted Hills area about their garbage not being collected.
“They had a couple of trucks that were down,” said Danny Miller, public works director. “That was the reason they were behind. But the supervisor said it will be back on schedule.”
Miller also added that the city’s collection app, which was designed by the Mississippi Planning and Development District, is working.
“But we are not using it to its full capacity,” Miller said.
Delaware said she is not pleased with the lack of usage with the app.
“I am somewhat embarrassed about the collector app because we created it in the city of Yazoo City thru the Mississippi Planning and Development, she said. “Other cities are using our creation much more effectively than us, maybe getting awards for the utilization of an application we created.”
