If you had told YHS Head Coach Sherrod Gideon his Indians would only be trailing the defending Class 3A champion Magee Trojans by a touchdown at the half with a chance to win, he would have been all in.
Unfortunately, the Indians were unable to keep pace with the champs and eventually dropped a 21-8 decision.
“We were right where we wanted to be but just had a few mistakes that cost us,” said Gideon. “Right now our biggest thing is we’ve got to get healthy. We’ve had several key guys nursing injuries the past few weeks and now it looks like (quarterback) Chris Burnett might miss some time. So right now our focus is on getting healthy.”
The Trojans led 7-0 at halftime but the Indians scored on the opening kickoff of the second half when Dewunya Jones raced 85 yards for a score.
He followed with the two-point conversion run and Yazoo City led 8-7. On their ensuing possession, the Trojans went on an 8-play scoring drive that ended with a 25 yard touchdown pass and PAT kick for a 14-8 lead.
They scored the game’s final TD on a fourth quarter run.
