Last Friday night’s football game between Yazoo City and Callaway resembled an old-school, 15-round boxing match, more than a football game, where the last fighter to get off his stool would be the victor.
Both teams exchanged jabs and knockout punches from start to finish, but in the end, the Indians were victorious in the war of attrition, 34-33.
The Indians opened things up in the first quarter with a 15-yard pass from Chris Burnett to Nikqwan Parker. Parker added the 2-point run, and the Indians were ahead 8-0.
Callaway would score the next two touchdowns to take a 14-8 lead before Burnett hooked up with Anthony Brown for a 14-yard pass.
The Chargers tacked on one more score before the half ended and took a 21-14 lead into the intermission.
YHS opened the third quarter on another Burnett to Brown hookup, this one for 20 yards to pull to within one, 21-20.
Callaway, however, scored on their ensuing possession to pull ahead 27-20.
Good fortune struck the Indians on their very next possession after a Burnett pass intended for Brown was picked off inside the red zone.
As the Callaway defender headed upfield, he was hit from behind and the ball was knocked free and directly into the waiting arms of Indian offensive lineman L.T. Brown who proceeded to rumble 15 yards for a score.
Burnett hit Jacquaris Rogers for the 2 pt. conversion and the Indians led 28-27 heading into the fourth quarter.
After a one yard run with 4:51 left to play, the Chargers pulled ahead 33-28, but the Indians had enough time for one last drive.
Yazoo City moved the ball down the field and scored what proved to be the winning touchdown with 2:52 remaining on a 24-yard pass from Burnett to Rogers.
Callaway answered back with an apparent touchdown, but it was negated by a holding penalty giving the Indians the win.
Yazoo City (1-0) hosts Humphreys County (0-1) Friday night. Kickoff is 7 p.m. The Cowboys forfeited last week to South Delta.
